A quick announcement:
Over the last few weeks, I’ve found myself teaching workshops, creating class outlines and generally writing more and more about drawing. Not just how to draw, but mostly the ideas—or at least my ideas— behind it. Why certain poses feel alive, the secret of appeal, qualities of a good pose. The same kinds of things I spent more than thirty years learning in books, practice and animation studios.
After a while, I realized those articles were becoming a different conversation. So I decided to give them a home of their own.
I’ve started a new Substack called The Cartoonist’s Studio.
The Cartoonist’s Odyssey won’t be going anywhere. I’ll continue to write about my creative life—my books, my stories, my successes and failures, and the occasional rabbit trail (which I am so good at)—but The Cartoonist’s Studio is where I’ll be sharing my knowledge, ideas, and lessons on drawing, design, and visual storytelling.
If you’ve ever wanted to hear the ramblings of a teacher on why some drawings seem to come alive while others fall flat, or you’re interested in character design, comics, animation, illustration, or simply learning to see a little differently, I think you’ll enjoy it.
